IT Support for Primary Schools

What are the common challenges that teachers experience with technology in the classroom?

Teachers tell us that the problems they experience regarding technology in the education sector are:

  • Managing student's attention when using devices in class as there can be multiple distractions and notifications

  • Teachers lacking confidence in delivering lessons using technology especially if they don't feel empowered in using the technology themselves

  • Accessibility issues impacting students whether accommodating to each child's needs or having enough devices available

  • Systems not in place to utilise technology in the curriculum

  • Unreliable devices and software across the board in education

  • Limited professional training for teaching staff

Schools currently have a fragmented approach to technology which has resulted in buying different devices, software or implementing new systems at different times. Many primary and secondary schools haven't got an adequate technology roadmap despite owning and using a lot of it in their school or trust.

Zenzero can help with ICT support by showing your school how to plan for the future with your own technology roadmap in an easy to do way. If your primary school has a roadmap already, we can help you implement it and suggest ways to improve what your school uses in order to get maximum value and benefit.

Many IT Managers or members of the school's leadership team have been told by their staff that their systems or internet connectivity are unresponsive or slow but aren't always sure how to solve it. Zenzero can help liaise between you and your staff to fix technical issues and recommend the most suitable solutions. By having a technology partner to rely on, your leadership team can feel empowered talking about technology in your school and have a reliable source of information whenever its needed.

If the rapid advancements of technology remain at the current pace, we know that 65% of students entering primary schools will work in roles that do not currently exist today.

The Future of Jobs, World Economic Forum, 2016.

How do we prepare students for those roles?

In a number of ways!

One is that we teach students a wide range of transferable skills. Another way is to ensure that their education utilises technology and software within the different aspects of their school subjects to prepare students for a world that does not yet exist. Schools that are confident with utilising equipment and technology have a heightened competitive advantage against schools that avoid it. By including the innovative tools available, good IT infrastructure and working collaboratively alongside traditional teaching methods, schools and students are able to perform better and the curriculum can be delivered more effectively. Students are likely to be more engaged when able to use YouTube, interactive programs or recording their presentations at school as lessons are delivered with a better context in regards to the outside digital world.

For many schools, it's about understanding how they can follow the curriculum or teach a broad spectrum of curriculum (for schools with academy status who do not follow the National Curriculum) while including a comprehensive range of technology. Why not let students take part in a science lesson by learning about volcanos through filming a simulated explosion and sharing it with their classmates? Zenzero can help your primary school if you're not sure how to get started on facilitating technology for students.

Collaborative tools for students

Students at all age levels find benefit from utilising Microsoft 365, from collaboration tools for group projects, virtual learning or being supported in core skills such as reading and writing.

Here are some of our favourite tools from Microsoft for primary schools:

Immersive Reader

An exciting software where traditional learning and technology meet to produce great results in students. Immersive Reader help improve reading and writing in all ages regardless of starting ability.

While it can be used by everyone, we have found it particularly helpful for younger students through its ability to sync any text or reading material and highlight syllables to guide its users.

Through its adoption, readers can increase their reading speed and comprehension. It also offers additional support for students with learning differences such as Dyslexia with text coding solutions.

For younger learners such as in Key Stage 1, there is also an option of the Picture Dictionary which shows images for highlighted words creating greater reading comprehension.

Immersive Reader can be used in both Microsoft Teams and directly from an assignment. It can be used to highlight the following in text:

  • Syllables to break words into syllables.

  • Nouns to highlight nouns in your document in purple.

  • Verbs to highlight verbs in your document in red.

  • Adjectives to highlight adjectives in your document in green.

  • Adverbs to highlight adverbs in your document in yellow.

Reading Progress

Reading Progress is another tool offered in Microsoft Teams to support teachers in tracking students' reading fluency.

Students record themselves on camera reading and submit it to you. As you mark and return their work, their data is collected and organised within insights to help track their progress.

Using Reading Progress allows teachers to focus more time to work closely with their students rather than tracking and analysing marks and scores.

Teachers can create assignments by class or reading level uploading their own file or selecting from the reading samples available. Students will then read on camera and the system can pick up on pronunciation and number of attempts in completing the reading.

Students can opt to record audio-only or audio and video depending on their comfort.

Planning and collaborating within your primary school

While adding more technology to lessons can increase engagement and therefore improve student outcomes, it can also create huge benefits for the leadership team and staff. In the image above you can see that St. Edmunds Primary School are using Microsoft Planner to store their annual initiatives and events. By using Planner, everyone with access can see live as more information is added in which means that they benefit from an accurate snapshot of what is being planned. It helps the team collaborate on joint initiatives and have visibility for any upcoming focus the school has. Teachers can also see benefits in using it for lesson planning when working with their TA or subject specialists by being able to add in notes, attachments, text and deadlines or dates.

By sharing data effectively and providing wider visibility through the advantages of technology - teams, departments and other teachers can offer guidance or previously used material that may improve and speed up tasks that take place in school. These tools can help improve communication across the school, making teachers' lives easier to manage and providing better work/life balance while increasing a primary's school effectiveness.

Working from anywhere

The current reality is that teachers' workdays are long. When school finishes and students leave to head home, there is still lesson planning, marking, parents evenings and reports to work through and prepare. While for the most part teaching will take place in the classroom, the remaining workload that teachers have should be able to be conducted from wherever your teachers are comfortable rather than having to be on-site at school.

Hiring and retaining great teachers through flexible working

As other professions enjoy the benefits of working from home, schools can ensure their technology and IT systems are able to be accessed from anywhere to support the autonomy of your staff. With better systems in place, your school is able to promote your flexible working practices to new staff who want to join your school and retain your existing staff.

Schools and multi-academy trusts are encouraged to adopt a flexible working policy which responds to the needs of the staff, and the employer, to address the challenges to flexible working in their school. Employers could consider embedding strategic, whole-school approaches to flexible working, with contribution from all parties.

Zenzero will help to make your school 'flexible working' ready

Having cloud-based systems is central to making flexible working possible. Zenzero can update your IT systems while ensuring that the right security is in place for a smooth 'work from anywhere' approach to make sure that any sensitive data remains secure. We will manage the hard work of getting systems ready so that for staff everything is easily accessible through a connected and simple login. This removes the need for your staff to call and email the person responsible for IT at your school or be prevented from doing what they need to, ensuring no loss in productivity.

Achieving your school's sustainability goals

By adopting a cloud-first solution and software, it is more carbon efficient than traditional data centres or a single server (which is what most primary education currently have). This can help your school achieve its sustainability goals, and Zenzero can manage the reporting for you to provide to your education leadership team.

Navigating cyber security & GDPR in your primary school

Cyber security and managing GDPR compliant data can feel quite daunting to primary education, while also knowing its something that needs to be managed effectively. By using a business like Zenzero that have experience and knowledge across both, you can offload the hard work in getting up to speed and making sure that the technology at your school is both safe and compliant as Zenzero will only implement IT systems that are.

Device Management

Zenzero can put in place a device management system allowing you to control how your organisation’s devices are used, including mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. We can also configure specific policies to control applications. For example, you can prevent emails from being sent to people outside your organization for students' accounts. Intune also allows people in your organisation to use their personal devices for school or work, perfect for schools who have or want to introduce Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies.

Why is using Zenzero the right choice for your primary school?
